What is unusual is that he kills Grendal with no armor and no weapons, proving that he is truly a heroic warrior.
Beowulf fights with his hands against Grendel because Grendel uses no weapons. Beowulf is a proud man who wants to fairly represent his nation. He wants to leave the judgment of the winner upon God, who will be his only weapon, because he feels that God will rightfully choose who will win.
Beowulf shows bravery, strength, loyalty, and a sense of duty as an epic hero in his battle with Grendel. He faces the monster alone, without any weapons or armor, to protect the Danes and fulfill his mission to defeat the creature threatening their kingdom.
Beowulf plans to fight Grendel without the use of weapons to make the battle more fair and honorable. He chooses this method to showcase his bravery, strength, and prowess in traditional hand-to-hand combat, which are highly valued traits in his warrior culture. Beowulf wants to prove his abilities without relying on weapons, relying instead on his own physical strength and skill.
Hrothgar told Beowulf not to become full of himself and succumb to his selfish desires."Choose, dear Beowulf, the better part, eternal rewards. Do not give way to pride. For a brief while your strength is in bloom but it fades quickly..." (1759-1762)Unfortunately Beowulf does not heed Hrothgar's warning in the Hall of Heorot, a speech that foreshadows the story's outcome. for more on this important speech, see the related links section below.

AnswerI read the epic poem and saw the movie. The movie stays pretty close to the movie except for two main points. Warning, these are spoilers. In the book Beowulf goes back to (the land of the Geat's) Geatland to become king of his uncles kingdom. In the movie he stays in (the land of the Danes) Denmark and becomes king of Hrothgar's kingdom. In the poem Beowulf kills Grendel's mom. In the movie they make love and have a human beast like creature son (a dragon as a son). Although, in the film Beowulf returns and says he kills her so I guess one could argue it stays in line with the poem that way. In the book she could be still alive and they do the same thing but it doesn't say so we will never know. Also the in the poem there is a larger social backdrop of this type of society that wants peace and stability but that is at odds with a heroic culture of honor and revenge. In the movie they only touch on that very briefly when Beowulf comments on that the age of heroes is giving way to Christianity.
