ee cummings was an exceptionally creative poet during the "Beat era" of the 1950s. His work formed a transition between traditional poets and contemporary poets. Two features of his poetry in particular may be said to stand out from other poetry of the day and enhance his verse. They are his incredibly vivid use of imagery and description, which is often grammatically incorrect, and his ability to restructure a line or sentence so that it is not grammatically correct but has additional grace and power.

An example of the first feature comes from his poem, "i thank you god":
"the leaping greenly spirits of trees and a true blue dream of sky."

Here is an example of his brilliantly fractured line sequences, from "if anyone lived in a pretty how town":

if anyone lived in a pretty how town
with up so many floating bells down.

One could also make a case for his striking use of rhyme, his wit and his subject matter, although, in this writer's opinion, his use of imagery and line seem to make his poetry stand out from that of other poets and to be instantly recognizable.
