Emily Dickinson lived from December 10, 1830, to May 15, 1886. Only five of her poems have been authentically dated earlier than 1858. But because of her personality, education, upbringing, and habit of maintaining heavy correspondence with friends, it does not seem like a wild guess to suppose that she was writing poetry long before 1858.
She write more than 1800 poems, of which fewer than a dozen were published during her lifetime.

Emily had a very reclusive life. She spent her years living upstairs at her father's house. She wrote as her way to express her feelings to the outside world. At the age of 17, Emily left for South Hadley, Massachusetts to attend the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. She stayed there less than a year. It was upon her return from Mount Holyoke that Emily began to write her very first poems. In the following years, fewer than a dozen of her nearly eighteen hundred poems were published during her lifetime.
