The common images of heaven , such as pearly gates and a golden city come from scriptures in The Bible which detail these mythological places. For instance, the book of Revelations gives a vivid description of what heaven is presumed to look like. The Bible also refers to a lake of fire several times. This "lake of fire" is said to originate with the Greek concept of Hades. Additionally, Dante's Divine Comedy has a descriptive account of the abyss of eternal punishment. Dante's images are still used today, but most of them have no Biblical base.
