Not sure how much my opinion is worth here... even though this will show as an 'expert answer', I have no expertise in this. But I'm gonna say go for the messy bun.

Putting your hair up at all puts stress on your hair, but it really depends on what kind of hair you have. For example, it could be thin or messy or straight. When I do my hair in a messy bun it doesn't damadge it at all. If it does, (if you have a straightening iron) you could use a straightening iron and smooth it all out or you could just take a shower and condition. Hope this helped (:
