Karl Mark reputedly said "Go on, get out! Last Words are for fools who haven't said enough!" to his housekeeper who had encouraged him to tell her his final words so that she could write them down for posterity. However this is likely not accurate. Marx was recuperating from pneumonia and his quiet but sudden death sitting in an armchair caught his family by surprise. Engels wrote a letter later that day that mentioned the state of Marx's health: a few days earlier Marx's physician told him there was a good chance Marx would be as healthy as he had been before. Marx's family had the same housekeeper for 40 years: Helene (Lenchen) Demuth, who raised the Marx children. She and Marx's daughter Eleanor were home when he died. It is highly unlikely that Demuth would encourage Marx to dictate his Last Words to her when she had no idea he was about to die.
