Hermes was ordered to kill the 100 eyed monster (Argus) that had been sent by Hera to follow one of Zeus' lovers. He eventually did so by playing his Flute to put him to sleep. When all of his eyes were closed, Hermes killed him.

When Hera found the monster dead she took all of its eyes and attached them to a bird known as the Peacock. The Peacock thus became her symbol as it reminded her of her faithful servant, Argus (the 100 eyed monster).
