The state is largely a left leaning place but it is unique in that it has a large population that opposes gun control, and a large, relatively well educated, well off Hispanic population that considers itself conservative but votes democrat substantially more than GOP. All in all NM's don't care what you do with your life as long as it doesn't effect theirs. This attitude lends itself more to liberalism than conservative ideals. Remember this is the only place in the US where a European and a Native population existed peacefully for upwards of 400 years.

New Mexico is considered a swing state with a mix of conservative and liberal voters. However, in recent years, it has trended more towards the Democratic Party in national elections.
