A score is 20 years. So, 4 score and 7 years ago would be 87 years ago. 'Fourscore' is four scores, i.e.80. But how about 'forescore'? Not yet in the dictionaries, but only due to a misprint. Shakespeare (whoever he was) in "Winters' Tale" uses the word 'fourscore' in the phrase "wednesday the fourscore of April". Which must surely be an editor's error for 'forescore', i.e. one less than a score, or 19. Perhaps the Stratford man's true birth date, since 19th April 1564 WAS a Wednesday, and the usual date given (23rd April, which would make him only 3 days old at baptism) is only a guess. (A week was the norm). Unless anyone seriously accepts the 80th April, which would, if carried over, work out to 19th June!
A score year is an archaic way of referring to 20 years. It was commonly used in historical documents or literature in the past, such as the Gettysburg Address where Abraham Lincoln mentioned "four score and seven years ago" to mean 87 years.
It was the phenomenal.
THE most famous of the oration pieces in the US is the Gettysburg Address. As you know it begins.. "Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a nation.." The flow is magnificent, and it is extremely stirring. It would not have been as effective if Abraham Lincoln had said (as it "translates") "87 years ago, the Revolutionists founded a new country..." Oration is a speech that makes it's point couched in descriptive language and the speech should be memorable to its hearers. The Gettysburg Address does this simply, effectively, and most eloquently.
I believe Aristotle said that the youth of today are not as good as the youth of yesterday. With that in mind, people have always compared the faults of the current generation to an idealized version that they can or choose to remember. In the past they still smoked weed, got drunk and had sex. However they did not have the ability to learn as quickly or communicate as well as the current youth. In the end we can't say that one generation is better than another, because they both have strong points and they both have faults. What we can do is ask, "What can we learn from the youth of 50 years ago to help the youth of today."
The largest cities in states are not always chosen as the capital because historical, political, or geographic reasons influence the decision. Capitals are usually chosen based on factors such as centrality, accessibility, and historical significance rather than just population size.
