A democracy is a form of government, where the average person has a direct say, or vote, in the everyday affairs of the government. The city-state of Athens, in ancient Greece, is a prime example.
A republic is a form of government where the average person is represented by someone else in the above-mentioned affairs. These representatives essentially cast their vote, which represents an entire area of the country or a group of people the representatives represent. Prime example of this, is the United States, a democratic republic; very different from a democracy.
Not every republic is democratic in nature, though it may be advertised as such. Many totalitarian nations such as the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), the People's Republic of China (Communist Mainland China) and the late Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Communist Russia and various satellite states) like to put those words in the name of their country to give its citizens the illusion of choice and freedom. These countries may have a republic as a functioning government, however the elections are usually posed and not "free" or "fair" in even the vaguest sense of the words.
The term "republic" is rather general, and is used to indicate a state in which the public can elect or nominate a ruler instead of having the state be ruled by a monarch. Currently, 135 countries claim to be republics. There are many different types of republics, though. For example, there are socialist republics, communist republics, mercantile republics, Calvinist republics, democratic republics, liberal republics, and even Islamic republics. The United States operates as a democratic republic, which is a state that has publicly-elected rulers, and in which all members of the public are guaranteed the same rights, even despite minority status.
All the countries in the world that are democratic are: Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Mexico, France, Singapore, America, England (UK) and Australia. However, Australia is not really a democratic government but is a constitutional monarchy. It became a democratic continent in 1901.
A democratic transition refers to the process of moving from an authoritarian regime to a democratic system, often involving changes in political institutions and practices. Democratic consolidation, on the other hand, refers to the establishment and maintenance of a stable democratic system over time, with strong democratic norms, institutions, and practices deeply rooted in society. In essence, a transition is the initial shift to democracy, while consolidation is the ongoing process of strengthening and maintaining democratic principles.
Procedural democratic theory focuses on the process and procedures of democratic decision-making, emphasizing fair and inclusive processes for reaching decisions. On the other hand, substantive democratic theory emphasizes the outcomes and results of decision-making, focusing on achieving social justice, equality, and other substantive goals within a democratic system.
One key difference between OPEC (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries) and the WTO (World Trade Organization) is their primary focus. OPEC aims to coordinate and unify petroleum policies among member countries to stabilize oil markets, while the WTO focuses on regulating international trade and resolving trade disputes. Additionally, OPEC is a voluntary organization composed of oil-producing countries, while the WTO is a global institution with a broader membership that includes most countries in the world.
a democratic republic consists of representitives ˆn office rather than families taking over as in feudalism.
The primary difference is that a Democracy is run by the majority, while a Republic is run by the law. A Republic prevents the majority from abusing the minority.
