Many countries are wealthy in a certain type of good, such as gold, trees, or maybe they have an abundant of crops. Yet they do are not able to provide everything for their citizens. When that happens, countries trade what they have an abundance of for things they are not able to obtain from their own country.

Nations compete with one another because it is the human condition. Competition exists throughout the animal kingdom and among all living creatures. And they cannot avoid competition. When one of two competitors decides to not compete, the competition continues, but only one benefits. If two competitors decide to coordinate or unite, it is possible to avoid competition, if they act as one. But that is an extreme case. In theory, two competitors could decline to compete, and, probably, engage in a conspiracy in restraint of trade.
