A democracy is a state that is run by the majority. Plato would argue that you couldn't build a "good democracy" since he believed that "A good decision is based on knowledge and not on numbers"

By maintaining the respect of the people. A specific government may keep power over a long period by doing well enough in its first term of office that the populace votes it in again to continue the good work.

The broad government form known as democracy draws its power mainly from the political participation of eligible citizens who, either directly or indirectly, elect representatives and other political figures to office.

Encompassing the practice of political self-determination, a democracy is what its etymology describes ("rule of the people" from the Greek δημοκρατία, or dēmokratía). As such, a democracy in theory becomes weak when citizens do not politically participate. Without the effort of the people who "rule," democratic governments are unable to operate effectively.
