Henry Stuart was very unpopular with his subjects, and his enemies plotted to kill him. One night they blew up the house Darnley was staying in at the time, but he had managed to escape. But once he got outside, he was caught and strangled to death by an unidentified assasin. His body, wearing only his nightgown, and the body of his servant, were found in an orchard in Darnley, Glasgow. There were people who believed that Queen Mary of Scots had conspired with the earl of bothwell, her next husband, to kill Darnley. Mary had apparently nursed Darnley only a few days before his death when he was sick with smallpox.
