Both movements increased the voter base and this makes the politicians more representative of the population. Abolition and the accompanying citizenship grant to the slaves across the world led to them being able to vote. (In the United States, this led to mass suffrage for Blacks.) Women's Rights Movements led to women gaining the right to vote.

The American traditions of democracy and isolation stopped the US from acting too strongly during the Cold War. If they did not have democracy they might well have decided to attack Russia which could have led to absolute devastation.
