Sometimes it was on account of patriotic fervor in the wake of a war (South-North German Nationalism), sometimes is was based on religious crusades (Greek Nationalism), sometimes it was on account of conventions and political dissertations (Jewish Nationalism), sometimes it was in response to colonial repression and a search for identity (Arab Nationalism), etc.

Joseph Stalin and Adolf Hitler were both nationalists and they spead it throughout Europe during WWII, by conquering other countries. People following the two leaders saw nothing wrong with the idea but people on the outside saw the EXTREME pride in their nation. In Hitler's situation it lead to the Holocaust.
