• In 1947, the National Security Act was passed in response to the Cold War. It formed the Department of Defense, and also a new Cabinet position, called the Secretary of Defense. The NSA also created the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA)
• Committee on Un-American Activities (HUAC) looked for communists in gov't
• Loyalty Review Board (1947)- interviewed gov't employees to discover if they were Soviet spies

The Hollywood Ten, a group of California film directors were denies from their work because they didn't answer HUAC's questions. Alger Hiss, Julius Rosenburg, and Ethel Rosenburg were some of the Americans who went to jail for just not answering HUAC's questions.
