The relationship did not change when George III came to the throne. Right up until near the end of the American War of Independence it was the British government that was the focus of American hate and only in the last stages of British rule in America did the relationship between the monarch and the colonists change for the worse. He and his predecessors were previously seen by the majority of Americans as "paternal guardians" and it is a myth that the king was the source of their troubles as George III did not have the power to make laws, raise taxes etc. The negative relationship between him and the colonists was established when George Washington and the revolutionaries needed a figure head to direct their frustration onto. Since George III was the figure head of Britain (as Elizabeth II is today) it made sense to use him as a scapegoat.
