During the McCarthy era in the 1950s, an estimated 3 million people were investigated for suspected communist influence in the United States. This included government employees, members of the entertainment industry, educators, and various other professions. Many individuals faced blacklisting, job loss, or social ostracism as a result of these investigations, which were often based on tenuous evidence or fear rather than solid proof of wrongdoing. The era is marked by a climate of paranoia and repression surrounding perceived communist sympathies.
During the Red Scare in the United States, over 3,000 individuals were investigated for suspected communist ties, with around 300 people eventually being charged and found guilty of various offenses related to communism. These convictions included charges of espionage, perjury, and membership in the Communist Party.
McCarthy accused many Americans of being communists. Ironically, he was never able to actually identify any communists. People who McCarthy named were brought before a senate committee and made to testify, and try to explain their innocence. McCarthy ruined many careers by falsely accusing people of being communist.

Communist governments were established quickly in Eastern Europe after World War II largely due to the power vacuum left by the defeat of Nazi Germany and the influence of the Soviet Union. The USSR sought to expand its sphere of influence by supporting communist parties in these nations, often through military presence and political pressure. Additionally, the social and economic chaos following the war made many people receptive to communist ideologies that promised stability and reform. As a result, communist regimes were installed in several countries with the support or coercion of the Soviet Union.
There are very few communist countries left. There are, however, socialist countries that are run by communist parties as well as communist states. These are: Central Asian-American Enterprise Fund; People's Republic of China; Cuba; East Germany; Finland Plot; North Korea; Laos; People's Republic of Angola; People's republic of Benin; People's republic of Mozambique; and, People's Republic of the Congo.
