It varies.. The Speaker of the House is elected either at the start of a new parliament after a General Election - or on the death or resignation of the current post-holder. Although theoretically, a new speaker should be elected after each General Election - it's quite common for the exiting post-holder to be re-elected without opposition. For example - the last three post-holders all served at lease eight years in the post.

People can then be re-elected and serve for many years. The president has a 7 year term and can serve for only 2 terms. Lord Mayors in Ireland generally serve a 1 year term.
