During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, several treaties have emerged, changing the borders of Brazil. There were also wars with neighboring countries caused by disputes over territory.

Only in the twentieth century, through treaties signed by the Baron of Rio Branco, which is present borders were defined.

Northern Region: Amazonas, Roraima, Rondônia, Amapá, Tocantins, Pará and Acre (45.2% of Brazilian territory);

- Northeast: Bahia, Sergipe, Alagoas, Maranhão, Piauí, Ceará, Paraíba, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco and Alagoas (comprising 18.2% of Brazilian territory);

- Southeast Region: Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo (10.8% of Brazilian territory);

- Southern Region: Rio Grande do Sul, Parana and Santa Catarina (6.7% of the country):

- Midwest Region: Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso, Goiás and Distrito Federal (18.8% of the country).
