The government tries to control the totality of a person's life: every, single decision. That is why it is called totalitarianism (from totality).
The Brotherhood in "1984" represents the hope for rebellion against the oppressive government and the possibility of freedom and resistance. It symbolizes the desire for change and the fight against totalitarian control in the dystopian society of the novel.
An autocracy is a government in which all power is in the hands of one person. It's hard to distinguish an autocracy from a dictatorship. An autocracy differs however from a totalitarian government because the latter is characterized by the desire of the state to control every aspect of everyone's lives, while the power isn't necessarily in the hands of one person.
Decolonization
A surplus of basic commodities which can be diverted to other than mere subsistence. Security from predators. The desire to cooperate to develop common goals. The desire for cultural and sovial development. Stable government to control and coordinate activities.
Anarchy.
I'd say the desire for control. People like to control everything.
These nuts
Merit: If the totalitarian government is benevolent and the people's need are being met the society can achieve spectacular and sublime results, i.e., the Pyramids of Egypt. Imagine, if you would, an ant colony; a total lack of diversity, everyone knows their place and duty, everyone works to the same strictly defined end results and no one person is the wiser. Demerit: Witness North Korea, Hitler's Germany, etc. The desire for ethnic purity, genetic engineering, thought police, state defined art, bureaucratic corruption, extreme paranoia and ultimately collapse and chaos. Witness the French revolution.
Sugar played a large role in the American's desire to control Hawaii, because Hawaii was a major supplier of sugar cane.
There are many reasons overall, but the most prevalent ways that self-government grew in the colonies was the desire to be free of the near-tyrannical control the British ruling class imposed on the commerce of the day
