What was life like for many freedmen in the South after the Civil Answer this question…
After the Civil War, many freedmen sought to build new lives for themselves by purchasing land and starting businesses.
The entry of freedmen into the job market in the South threatened white landowners and employers who relied on a system of cheap labor, often rooted in racial hierarchies. Many white Southerners feared that the economic independence of freedmen would undermine their control and the existing social order. This led to resistance against African Americans seeking better wages and working conditions, ultimately resulting in discriminatory practices and violence to maintain white supremacy.
