In most states, candidates for election must submit petitions in order to have their names placed on the ballot. The petition must be signed by a large number of residents of the district in which the candidate wishes to run. In some states, political parties that meet some legal standard may directly nominate candidates to put them on the ballot.

No, you need to be registered in your town or city. When you go into vote there are two books they use to look you up. First you give your name, address, and ID. The second book you sign your name under the listing of your name. You are then given your ballot. I vote by mail and to do that I fill out the ballot, seal it in an envelope sent with it, and sign it. When it gets to the election office they compare my signature on file.
