A conservative in the USA is first and foremost, not defined as a republican or a Christian. A conservative is someone who believes in smaller government, lower taxes, individual rights, strong national defense through a strong military and maintaining the core family values that helped establish our great country. As it pertains to the constitution, a conservative believes in what is called "original intent." A conservative does not believe we should have to translate the constitution in order to have it apply to us more effectively, in the original text, it is the most complete document ever created.

Ronald Reagan (cornerstone of modern conservatism) said this, "The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help."

Though, he also said, "Recession is when your neighbor loses his job. Depression is when you lose yours. And recovery is when Jimmy Carter loses his."

Conservative thinking is to hold and sustain past generations human-good a religious-good values, for example, no abortion, protection of the LIFE, Law and Order, so it is not just an "old stuff" but traditional, conventional, orthodox, old-fashioned, dyed-in-the-wool, hidebound, unadventurous, set in one's ways; moderate, middle-of-the-road, buttoned-down; informal stick-in-the-mud.
