The term "gas" applies to several different substances. Gases are a phase of matter, created when the temperature of a substance is above its boiling point.

GASOLINE - This is a combination of many volatile liquids and gases extracted from petroleum. Its exact composition varies, but it is created by heating and fractional distillation.

NATURAL GAS - Methane gas obtained from underground, or from petroleum. Methane is odorless but the chemical mercaptan (CH3SH) is added to enable detection by smell.

INTESTINAL GAS - Gas that is swallowed into the digestive tract, or produced (as by fermentation) in the bowel. The smell of these gases is usually created by various sulfur compounds.
