It was not good for a kingdom when a king died without a clear heir. When this happened, it often, possibly usually, caused a war over who would be the next king. The Norman Invasion happened for this reason, as did the Hundred Years' War, the War of the Roses, and a number of other wars.

Kings tried to prevent these wars by making their nobles swear they would accept the appointed heir. This often or usually did not work.
