A religion based trial testing the belief of those who do not conform to the same religion. For example under Queen Mary (1553-1558) those who did not conform to the Catholic religion were tried and if they refused to conform they were then burnt at the stake to cleanse them of their sins. Mary burnt some 130, mostly C of E clerics and monks for failing to conform, but also publishers and writers etc.
