Speech enhancment is the forensic process of lowering background noise and increasing the speech, spoken words or conversation in an audio recording to better hear the dialogue exchange. Enhancement tools include equilization, compression, noise reduction, and speech levelers to name a few.

Speech enhancement is necessary when an audio recording's volume is to low to understand the dialogue exchange. Often times audio recorders are used to record conversation in a noisey environmnet causing speech volume to be too low to comprehend. This is when an audio forensic expert will be asked to enhance the speech so the dialogue exchange is audible.
