Socialism has been grounded in different economic theories throughout its history.

Early models of socialism were grounded in classical economics, influenced by the works of Adam Smith and David Ricardo. Classical anarchists based their models of socialism and mutualism on this theory.

Marxian economics and Marxism inspired models of socialism after Marx's work became well-known.

By the beginning of the 20th century, socialism was becoming increasingly grounded in neoclassical economic theory and marginalism. Leon Walras, Enrico Barone, Alfred Marshall, Oskar Lange, Henry Douglas Dickinson and Fred. Taylor were notable neoclassical economists who contributed to socialist theory.

Towards the end of the 20th century, socialists began looking beyond Marxism and Neoclassical orthodoxy.
