It's pretty much the same as for Presidential Elections in the USA- there is a General Election held every four or five years (five years being the maximum legal time limit), with the nation's public casting their ballots for the political party of their choice. The party that gets the biggest number of votes, wins.
However, they have to attain a minimum number of seats in the House of Commons in order to be able to form a Government. If they get the biggest number of votes, but still fall short of this minimum number required by law, then they can either call another General Election immediately, or seek to go into a Coalition Government with another party. This is what happened in the 2010 elections- the Conservatives got the most votes, but fell short of the number of seats needed to assume power on their own, so they formed a coalition with the Liberal Democrats, with some Lib Dem politicians holding Ministerial posts in the Government.
It is the first Coalition Government in England since WW2, when all parties came together because of the international crisis.
