Broadly, nationalism created new social groups that transcended traditional religious, cultural, or socio-economic factions and that, in turn, created demand for new political institutions to represent these new groups. When the new groups were unable to be represented, for a variety of reasons (e.g.) they lived in multiple states or were minorities in their states) they could sometimes only resort to violence as a means to make their demands heard. Additionally, sometimes nationalism supported other causes, as occurred in some of the Revolutions of 1848.
Both nationalism and patriotism indicate the relationship of the individual with his community of people.
