The Federalists and John Adams won the first contested presidential election in 1796. Four years later they lost the White House to Jefferson and his party.

The candidate for the Democratic-Republican Party in the election of 1796 was Thomas Jefferson. He ran against John Adams of the Federalist Party and ultimately became the vice-president after Adams won the presidency.

Thomas Jefferson ran against Adams in 1796 and 1800 . Adams won in 1796 but lost in 1800.
Democratic Party
Adams and Jefferson participated in the first contested election in 1796. Adams wanted a much stronger federal than did Jefferson who favored letting the states settle most questions. After Jefferson lost in 1796, he tried to strengthen his party , fight the views of Adams and win in 1800, which he did.
