King Charles I grew up shy and starved of his parent's affection, which was delegated to the oldest son, Prince Henry. He also spoke with a stammer and became very vindictive towards male courtiers who got his father's attention.

When Charles became king, he understood very well the duties of a monarch, and was able to put up a good appearance of being a proper ruler. He was very diligent in his paperwork and very involved with the decision making of the government. However, he did not understand the give-and-take relationship between the crown and parliament, and he thought that if he made his will known, then everyone would obey because he had divine providence. This created the problems that led to the English Civil War.
