King George III tried to get the American Colonies to help pay the war debts from the French and Indian War (7 Years War). He appointed a bunch of thugs to collect the money and sent an army to the colonies to help his thugs. The thugs ignored the low theoretical rates. In 1663 John Owen spoke his famous words, "Taxation without Representation is Tyranny." In 1664 an American Militia in Fayetteville, North Carolina, defeated a marauding band of the kings solders preventing them from sacking yet another town. Massacres by the British Army occurred in other North Carolina counties as well as in other colonies.

Communities created committees of correspondence to serve to unite various militias.

The various state governments sent delegates to Philadelphia and created a congress of all the states. They called it The Continental Congress. They would show King George they could act together. In 1775 they sent a delegation to King George.

In London the delegation petitioned to see the king. King George sent word that he refused to see them the Continental Congress was an illegal institution and should be disbanded immediately.

The delegation reported back to the Continental Congress. The George Washington became Commander in Chief of the Continental Army.

Not really. The declaration talked about who had a right to govern. It did not dispute the need for government, but justified the right to be independent of the rule of the English king and the right of the people to choose their government. It attacked the idea that people like King George had to right to rule because of their royal birth.
