He received a very good education, being placed first in the Abbey of Fontevrauld, then in his older brother Henry's household and finally in his father's justiciar Rannulf de Glanville's one. There he acquired his interest in law and government. As an adult, he became really fond in books and collected many. It is recorded that he owned a copy of Pliny and gave it to the abbot of Reading in exchange for a history of Normandy in French.
