In 1834, the political party known as the Whig Party was formed in the United States. It emerged in opposition to the policies of President Andrew Jackson and the Democratic Party. The Whigs advocated for a stronger role of Congress and favored modernization and economic protectionism. The party played a significant role in American politics until the mid-19th century.
