The Democratic-Rebuplicans

were one of two of the first political parties in the United States. (The other party of the time was called the Federalists.) The Democratic Republicans are also referred to as the Jeffersonian Republicans

because Thomas Jefferson's ideas were the ideas they believed in. They had ideas that by today's standards would be considered democratic. They had ideas that by today's standards would be considered republican. They feared a strong central government. They favored states rights. They believed in the strict (narrow) construction (interpretation) of the Constitution: that Laws must be "proper" as well as "necessary." They were opposed to Hamilton's ideas of the U.S.

Bank, and Assumption (Federal Govt. to assume post Revolutionary war debts of the states.) They were criticized for being oriented toward political dissension and rebellion. In fact, their leader Thomas Jefferson believed that rebellion and revolution, every so often,were necessary to maintain liberty. At the onset of the revolution in France, the democratic-republicans supported the cause. They believed in a Laissez-faire

(hands off) , free market. They opposed industrialism. They thought taxes should be small, used only for revenue. They opposed protective tariffs.

They favored a democracy in which everyone was at a somewhat equal level on the socioeconomic scale. They envisioned a nation of farmers. They found strength in the South and West. They were in power from 1801-1825.
