In the United States, registered voters elect their representatives. If a representative dies or for some other reason leaves or is removed from office, each State has a method of replacing him/her. For example, the governor might appoint a substitute to fill out the remaining period of the term. Thereafter, the appointee may choose to run for reelection and may or may not face opposition.
