During Reconstruction, one prominent political figure who fought to restrict African American rights was Andrew Johnson, the 17th President of the United States. Additionally, many Southern politicians, including members of the Ku Klux Klan and those in the Democratic Party, actively worked to disenfranchise and oppress Black citizens during this period.
