There were six Mayors of New York City in the 1880s. At the time, New York City mayors served one-year terms. However, only five different men were mayor, because one of them, William Russell Grace, served two non-consecutive terms. He was both New York's 87th Mayor and its 89th Mayor.

New York City's 86th Mayor was Edward Cooper (Democratic), who served from 1879 through 1880.

The 87th Mayor was William Russell Grace (Democratic, anti-Tammany), who served from 1881 through 1882.

The 88th Mayor was Franklin Edson (Democratic), who served from 1883 through 1884.

The 89th Mayor was William Russell Grace again. Now Independent, he served his second term from 1885 through 1886.

The 90th Mayor was Abram S. Hewitt (Democratic), who served from 1887 through 1888.

The 91st Mayor was Hugh L. Grant (Democratic), who served from 1889 through 1892.
