Why did Israel attack Palestine?

At first, the Palestinians wanted to recover the land that had been lost in the formation of Israel, or at least win the right of refugees to return to their ancestral homes in what was now Israel. The conflict evolved, with the Palestinians becoming more concerned with preventing more incursions by the Israelis into what was now the Palestinian territories.

In large part, the conflict, on both sides, is now about tit-for-tat. One side attacks the other, and the other responds. There will never be an end to the conflict between Palestine and Israel until each side agrees to end its own attacks, and does not respond to provocation from the other side.

They have attacked the Muslim world ever sense the establishment of Israel in 1947. At first the state of Israel abolished a major majority of Muslims out of their lands, those that resisted were tied up and tossed into the river at gun-point. Israel had a cold relations with the Muslims world right after its establishment. In 1967 Israel launched his FIRST attack against Egyptian airspace after a tense relation by bombardments in Gaza Strip that was under the Jordanian control. That announced the 6-day war were Israel was the victor over Jordan, Syria and Egypt. Israel took the lands of Palestine from Jordan and has launched a war of attrition against them, as of 2012 Palestine has the worst living condition imaginable with lack of food, homes, unemployment, medicine and constant attacks and oppression from Israel.

The answer to this depends entirely on which war you are referring to since the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict has numerous wars. Israelis and Palestinians have clashed on several engagements. The one that is most commonly seen as an aggressive Israeli attack is the 2008-2009 Gazan War. The Israeli rationale in that war was to prevent a constant barrage of rocket attacks against Israeli civilians in neighborhoods near to the Gaza Strip. Israel opposes the Hamas Government in the Gaza Strip because Hamas (in addition to having a political wing) is a paramilitary organization that refuses to recognize the validity of the State of Israel in contravention to the Oslo Accords. Israel has attempted to minimize the arrival of weapons into Gaza to prevent war between Hamas and Israel (which must occur according to the Hamas charter until Palestine has erased Israel).

As for Answer 2, there needs to be clarification on the topic. The question is "Why" did Israel attack Palestine, not "What is the evidence that Israel has oppressed Palestinians," which is what Answer 2 seems to discuss. There are also a large number of factual errors in Answer 2 including:

• "Abolishing Muslims" - Islam has been a legal religion in Israel with a number of specific rights. While a number of Muslims did flee the Creation of the State of Israel (and many certainly did fear Israeli military attacks whether justified or not), Israel did not abolish or forcibly exterminate Muslims.
• Muslims were not tossed into rivers at gun-point, primarily because Israel and Palestine are devoid of rivers large enough and deep enough for a human to be tossed into.
• Cold-Relations with neighbors -- Israel made repeated overtures to make a longer peace with its neighbors as early as 1950. It was the Arab and Muslim States that refused to negotiate with Israel. Ralph Bunche, who negotiated the 1949 Egypt-Israeli ceasefire noted that the Egyptians would not talk to the Israelis even though the Israelis spoke to the Egyptians.
• 1967 was not the first Israeli attack against Egypt, this came in 1956 when Egypt prevented Israeli ships from crossing through the Suez Canal, which is a breach of international law. In 1967 Israel responded to another legitimate causus belli which was the blockading of international waters to unduly hurt Israel, the Straits of Tiran.
• The Gaza Strip was Egyptian controlled, not Jordanian controlled.
• The War of Attrition was waged by Egypt against Israel from 1967-1970. Jordan was not in any way involved in that conflict.
• While Gaza certainly has horrible living conditions, the situation in the West Bank is actually relatively decent, especially when you consider the way that Syria looks right now and the way Palestinians are treated in Lebanon.

It depends on which Palestinian conflict the question is referring to.

Is it the Arab-Palestinian Conflict? -- which began in 1948, but became much more violent in the 1970s and 1980s, killing between 5,000-25,000 Palestinians depending on the estimates used. This conflict began when the Palestinians fled from the former Mandate of Palestine and the governments of the Arab countries to which they fled preferred to effectively incarcerate them in refugee camps for generations.

Is it the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict? -- which began in the 1920s, but became much more widespread in 1947 with the Jewish-Arab Engagement and the Arab-Israeli War of 1948-9. Approximately 19,000 Palestinians have died in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. This conflict started in the conflict between Zionism (Jewish Nationalism) and resurgent Arab Nationalism. It continues as a conflict between these two nationalisms and various religious, political, social, and economic groups which have chosen to support one side or the other.

Is it the Palestinian Civil War? -- which began in 2006, but most violence took place in 2007 with approximately 600-1000 deaths. The causes of this conflict deal primarily with leadership/political disputes between Fatah and Hamas over governance of the Palestinian Territories.

In Hamas' Jihadist conception, only Muslims should be in power in the State and any non-Muslim minorities should have a secondary role if they should have one at all, whereas Jews are too "uppity" in having created a state (Israel) where they are in the dominant position. Second, Israel is situated in territory which used to be governed by Muslims for nearly 1300 years (with a century-long break under the Crusader States). As a result, Israel is considered a usurpation of historical Islamic authority whereas European countries (for example) never had Islamic authority before. Hamas believes that all of Israel should be eliminated and there should be a single Palestinian State from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. They further harbor intense Anti-Semitic views and actively promote the idea of ethnically cleansing the Jews out of Israel.

It is for these reasons that Hamas consistently attacks Israel.

Specific Qur'anic Analysis
Since Israel, according to Hamas, is fulfilling exactly the obligations of Surat Al Baqarah 2:191-193:. For them, Israel has expelled Palestinians from their land. There is a struggle in the Palestinian Territories for freedom. They have not ceased to occupy the lands that they currently control and they have not capitulated religiously to Islam. Therefore, aggression is entirely legitimate. Additionally, Hamas is an incredibly Anti-Semitic organization, actively citing Hadiths which call for the eradication of Jews.

Q: 2:191-193 (Translation Sahih International): (191) And kill them wherever you overtake them and expel them from wherever they have expelled you, and fitnah [struggle] is worse than killing. And do not fight them at al-Masjid al-Haram [the Great Mosque in Mecca] until they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers. (192) And if they cease, then indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful. (193) Fight them until there is no [more] fitnah and [until] worship is [acknowledged to be] for Allah . But if they cease, then there is to be no aggression except against the oppressors.
