The US Frontier Wars officially ended in 1890 at the battle of Wounded Knee. The US was used to expanding, the men that had fought the "wars" needed a "reason for being" (a reason to exist), with the continent of the United States settled (in 1890), the US had to look elsewhere. That "elsewhere" was foreign adventures.

There is no reason for imperialism other than greed and fear. Since the US never really had to fear any country after the War of 1812 I would have to say fear was not a reason for imperialism!
