Are freedom and tradition mutually exclusive, Do we not have a tradition of freedom?

Freedom of speech (one aspect) does have limits but I am wondering if recent inappropriate remarks on various football fields really merit so much attention when some nations seem to be blown to bits by shells fired by their own Governments.
