Why do wars exist?

Imagine an America with out the revoloutionary war. Imagine Hitler, with out a world warII to stop him. War has many down sides, it involves hurt, death, and desctuction. But as long as there is hate in this world, there must be people who stand against it to perserve the beauty of life. It does take sacrifice, it does take death at times. If you don't fight against hate, that hate will kill you, your family, and your friends. With war we have death to, but at least its a death to keep life, not a death because we hid from or ignored hate. wars importance: a way to preserve the beauty of life.

There's a well known quotation from the Prussian military theorist Clausewitz (1780-1831): "War is the continuation of policy [politics] by other means". Obviously, war is an attempt by one country (or side, in a civil war) to impose its will on another. I think that should cover most cases. Joncey

Wars are fought for survival, or to prevent one group from being subjugated by another. In the age of empires, wars are fought to increase the power or wealth of one nation at the expense of others. They are also fought over differences in culture, religion, and ideology.

The instinct of killing each other is deeply rooted inside us, as human beings had been hunters for over 50,000 years while only being farmers for 5,000. According to Pershing, war brings everybody together. People somehow feel as if their lives are worth living if they fight for their nation, race or loved ones.

Resolving Problems

Often, men have conflicting desires, wants, and war is seen as one of the options used to resolve these differences. These desires are far-ranging but usually relate to power or control in some way. Some examples include wars over slavery, resources, or other ideologies.

Unity

War is a force that gives us meaning. War helps unite people against a common enemy, even if the enemy is no different from themselves. When wars end, people often feel empty and less united than before.

Glory

Some people have fought war for the sake of accomplishing something. Examples of such men include Alexander the great, Julius Caesar, Genghis Khan, and men who fought under them.

Establishing Superiority

Often wars are fought when one side is dehumanized, and seen as inferior or unequal to one's own country, race, or religion. When this happens, personal value judgments are more likely to cause conflicts between the two sides. These conflicts can escalate to wars.

Great question and we all ask it as well. To simplify let's just say ignorance, greediness, a desire for control, or whatever other selfish reasons someone can have. On the other hand, some people just have to go along, to participate in order to protect themselves.

There are 3 reasons that basically cover all wars. Resources, pride, and power. Resources are finite and some have more than others.

Pride covers many things, including striking back against antagonism or provocation.

Power is obvious, because to the victors go the glory, and the spoils.

Another point should be made is that traditionally, war is good for the economy. Industry booms and the work force is thinned (this is looking at war with zero emotion). War was what got us out of the great depression. Religion is a humongous driving force in many of the conflicts in history. In fact, most of the time religion, if not THE main factor, is one of the reasons people go to war.

Seriously, no-one wants war, and wars do not always achieve their aims; but I suggest you learn mid-20C European history before you parade your ignorance with clauses like "nobody wins", although both sides do usually suffer dreadfully in the process.
