Why is China under dictatorship?

Because China does not allow dissent. In other words, the society is governed by an authority that has absolute power over its citizens, which is the definition of an authoritarian government.

I think the answer to the question that why Chinese tolerate a totalitarian governemt is simple. Most of Chinese believe their interests are maintained under the current political circumstance, especially among the mature citizens. This is a comparatively optimal option. Chinese are different from westerners. The current economy and the education level of the citizens vary greatly among the different regions. Once suddenly imposing the western political institution on China, the unrest in the poiltics is inevitable. Take Taiwan for example. Some westerm media applaud for clamorous Taiwanese democracy. But compared to the unison of political voice in China, it's more "unrest" than political activities. Taiwanese are typical Chinese. If you magnify Taiwan to the size of China in socioeconomic terms, then you can figure out the size of the "unrest" you will get. In fact, most of Chinese people, especially those ellites are not fools and they understand what western politicians promote thoroughly. They understand what is going in there. Currently, Chinese economy is still weak if you check the GDP per capita. A large number of people, not those westerners see in the rich coastal cities, are still very poor. Nowadays the world is relatively peace and less hostile for China's economic development. If China can't seize this precious opportunity to develop its economy wholeheartedly, that would be the greatest tragedy for this nation. Without a powerful economy, many harsh social problems seems unsolvable. So, to maintain an even political circumstance for economic development, most people especially among the mature citizens don't want to overthrow the government or sth. They do critize the government and complain about the corruption or sth, especially in the internet but that doesn't mean that Chinese people believe they need a new government.

I believe that China will become democratic some day in future. It's the inexorable trend and just a matter of time. But China do need to develop its economy currently. .Taiwan and s Korea, these two Confucian regions are best examples for this trend.

Because China is the follower of Communism instead of Democracy and Capitalism therefore China and Russia are considered to be the non-democratic countries along with some other countries of Asia and Africa.
