Why is the president black?

People of traditional African descent carry a dominant gene of dark skin. Obama's father is of Kenyan origin. Therefore Obama is considered black because of his father's genealogy giving Barack Obama dark skin. The dark skin African's have is also known as a race in America called 'African American' which is also informally known as black. ALSO, black people love an excuse to annoy the world by acting like obama is a messiah and that he's here to save the world. Can't wait to see what he does, so far not much :(

I would think, that President Obama considers himself as, "multi-racial." In several of speeches, he reveals that that his mother was a European-American (which means she has white skin) and that President Obama's father was from Kenya.

First, it should be noted that he is the first black president in the United States; there are countries in Africa that have already had black presidents or prime ministers. As for why Mr. Obama was the first in the US (an event which did not occur until 2008), that is a complicated question. One factor is that the US practiced racial segregation till 1954, when the Supreme Court outlawed it; part of segregation in a number of southern cities was making it almost impossible for black people to vote. Even after segregation was outlawed, many southern cities still continued to resist giving black people full equality, which made it difficult for black candidates to get elected.

Other African-American candidates did try to run for president-- in 1972, for example, Shirley Chisholm was the first black woman; and Jesse Jackson was the first black man to make the attempt, in 1984. But neither was successful in gaining the kind of support needed to win a national campaign. It was not until the 1990s that more women and more minorities began to win national elections, in state legislatures and then in the US congress. By 2007, when Barack Obama announced his candidacy, the idea of a minority candidate was no longer as unusual as it had been as recently as the 1970s.

But if you are asking why Mr. Obama won, the short answer is because the country was ready for a change. After eight years of President Bush, whose policies were now extremely unpopular (even among many Republicans), Barack Obama was seen as someone new and unique: he was an eloquent and dynamic speaker plus an excellent campaigner (he especially built coalitions among young people, racial minorities, and college-educated women), and he was perceived by these groups as someone who could improve the country. The United States soon returned to being very polarized, but for a brief time in November 2008, a majority of Americans were united: they voted for Barack Obama, and he was elected America's first black president.
