Edwin made Cole carry the rock up a hill, he told Cole the rock is your ancestors and the hill is life. Edwin used this as a lesson for Cole. When they got to the top of the hill Cole put the rock down, the rock then became his anger, Edwin told Cole to push the rock down the hill roll away his anger. With each time you roll the rock away and carry it up the hill you will learn respect said Edwin....
The rock symbolizes your ancestors and the at ow symbolizes friendship and trust
Cole mistakenly mistakes a white bear for a coyote in "Touching Spirit Bear." He reacts by throwing a rock at it, which triggers the bear to attack him, leading to his serious injuries.
Cole thinks about how he is responsible for his own actions, and how carrying the ancestor rock is symbolic of the weight of his past mistakes. He realizes the importance of taking responsibility and working towards healing and redemption.
he learns that life can change instantly, and it can't be controlled(like when the baby bird's tree was struck, but it wasn't expected, and they depened on it,also)
In the book "Touching Spirit Bear," the rock represents healing and transformation. It is a symbol of the protagonist Cole's journey towards self-discovery, forgiveness, and redemption. By connecting with the rock through his atonement ceremony, Cole is able to undergo a spiritual and emotional transformation.
when he throws a rock
The rock represents Cole's ancestors and their struggle. It also symbolizes Cole anger when he pushes it down the hill.
Cole learns some what from Edwin and Garvey, but he mostly learns from everything he did when he came to the island the second time. Such as carrying the ancestor rock up the hill and rolling it back down. Also when he soaks in the little river. Then he also controls his anger by doing the "anger dance" after Garvey and Edwin left the island.
For example the at,oow that Garvey gave to Cole when they arrived at the island that represented trust. " ...you must promise to care for it and someday pass it to someone you trust." this is a quote from the book which Garvey said to Cole.
"I'm part of some big circle that I don't understand. And so are you. Life, death, good and bad, everything is part of that circle. When I hurt you, I hurt myself, too. I don't think I'll ever heal from what I did to you, but I'm sorry, Peter. I really am sorry.""That hotdog did exactly what you asked it to do. You asked it to feed you, and it fed you. No more, no less""Whatever you do to the animals, you do to yourself. Remember that.""The mauling didn't make sense. In the past, everything had always been afraid of him. Why wasn't the bear scared?""A strange thought occurred to Cole: the world was beautiful. Yes, the world was beautiful….He wondered why he had never noticed this all before. How much beauty had he missed in his lifetime? How much beauty had he destroyed?""Yes, [the hot dog celebration] was a big deal. It was a party. It was a feast. It was a sharing and a celebration. All because that is what I made it. Yours was simply food because that is all you chose for it to be. All of life is a hot dog. Make of it what you will. I suggest you make your time here on the island a celebration.""[Cole] couldn't stop wondering why he had been born and thinking about all the twisted events that had brought him to this moment. It seemed a bizarre dream to be standing alone on this rocky hillside in Alaska with a round stone at his feet, his mind filled with thoughts so totally different from anything he'd known running around on the streets back in Minneapolis. He felt like a new and a different person.""A whale migrates but it doesn't have a home…I feel like the whale."Cole: "[Peter's] never going to forgive me." Garvey: "Think how much your arm and hip still hurt. Wounds of the spirit heal even slower.""Being invisible had nothing to do with being seen. Being invisible meant not being sensed or felt.""The dances, carving the totem, carrying the ancestor rock, touching the Spirit Bear, it was all the same thing-it was finding out who I really was.""Standing beside the totems, he explained to Peter that being invisible was being a part of life's circle and accepting it. 'This morning, when we forgave each other, we also forgave ourselves…We allowed ourselves to become a part of the big circle. That's why we saw the Spirit Bear.'"
The circle Cole carved in the rock symbolizes his journey towards healing and transformation. It represents his connection to the natural world, his inner peace, and the start of a new beginning. It serves as a reminder of his past actions and a commitment to change for the better.
