One prehistoric animal that lived in California was a type of icthyosaur, the Californosaurus. Californosaurus lived between 216 and 228 million years ago, during the Carnian stage of the Upper Triassic, a time when California was submerged under the ocean.
Much more recently, about 10,000 years ago during the late Pleistocene, a huge variety of large mammals inhabited California. In fact, one of the best sites to find the fossils of extinct animals like Columbian mammoths, Smilodon, Dire wolves, flat faced bears, and more are the La Brea Tar Pits, located in southern California.
