Wood was the first material used for tools, however none survive today. The use of wooden tools can be observed in modern gorillas and chimps, which will often use sticks to trap insects or logs as a raft.

After that, man learnt to make tools from stone. This was usually flint stone which had been shaped and crafted into knives and small axes.

And eventually metal, usually copper but there is also evidence of gold being used (though mostly for decoration).
