Natural gas and coal use is very old. The first recorded history of coal use is by the Romans in the first or second century, AD. It was coal found on the ground that was used for heating.

It is speculated that the natural gas seeps was the source of "eternal flames" in the Chinese temples. I have included one link that states this could go back as far as 1000 BC.

The commercial drilling for oil and gas began in the late 1800's. Col. Edwin Drake drilled the first commercial oil well. See the third related link for an excellent account of his discovery well. The oil that flowed from his 70' deep well was placed in a bath tub.
